I think that Hearden does a good job of being concise and teaching people that don't know much about the war the basic facts. We learned about an entire country's history in under 200 pages. Though it's only the a brief summary of what happened, I think it provides a good foothold for further research and learning about the topic. It'll be much easier to understand movies such as Full Metal Jacket and put the events of the movie into perspective. I actually just finished watching the movie; It was interesting to see what the film writers' perspectives about the war were back in the '80s.
To be honest, I was planning on simply reading the book and then returning it to the coop to get my money back. However, I think I might keep this book in case I need it for reference. It's easy to refer back to if I'm looking for something, because the book is well organized. I remember how quickly I was able to finish the map we had to do. If there was something I couldn't find, I just looked it up in the index.
I agree with Casey on the book being very moving. It certainly raised my interest in the events that happened, and is motivating me to learn more about the subject. The issue of containing communism was a global issue throughout the Cold War, and I would like to learn more about the politics and conflicts.
