Before reading this book, I had limited knowledge of the Vietnam war like everyone else. I knew about America's involvement and Tet offensive and such but never knew about the other countries involved. Though my family is from Vietnam we never talked much about the war but rather the aftermath and how Vietnam has changed.
This book was a good choice to begin the semester with because now we all know of what went on both in the U.S. and Vietnam during the years covered. I liked the fact that the author was careful not to be bias while writing the book. I also liked the fact that the author did not focus only on battles but other issues such as the struggle Buddhists had gone through. For a war that lasted so long, I feel Hearden did a good job of writing about it in less than 200 pages. I do, however, wished that Hearden had covered a bit more of the Vietnamese who tried to leave the country and the consequences they had faced.
I am looking forward to learning more about the war and other aspects that were not mentioned in this text. After reading this, I feel there's so much more about the war that 200 pages cannot cover.
