She realizes though, that their simplicity, rather than a curse, is what drives their very lives and makes them the respectable and noble individuals which she perceives them to be. She risked her very life for the chance to hopefully gain a better understanding of the people and be able to generate further awareness for their cause. She certainly was narrow minded in her viewpoint of American imperialism, but the greatest thing for me was seeing her perceptions change over time. By the end, she acknowledged herself as an American and admitted to loving her life as one, she just does not agree with American policies. She does not have to be unpatriotic to disagree with the government.
